Naked To The Flame - Peter Hammill - Singularity (CD, Album)

Central to the realisation of all the songs are authoritative vocal performances in lead, backing and choral roles. Once again the whole thing is written, performed, sung and recorded entirely solo.

Songs include: 1. Eat my Words 2. Bite my Tongue 3. That Wasn't What I Said 4. Constantly Overheard 5. New Pen-pal 6. Close to Me 7. All the Tiredness 8. Perfect Pose 9. Scissors Bravest Face A Run of Luck. While continuing to play his part in the ongoing career of Van der Graaf Generator - indeed, perhaps because the louder side of his nature is very much fulfilled in that environment - Peter has found himself increasingly drawn towards genuine solo performance when under his own name.

Over a series of tours he has reconnected with songs old and new in the ultimate stripped-down format of piano and voice, guitar and voice. This double CD, taken from concerts in Japan and the UK in is Peter's first solo live recording since 's "Typical" and shows him at the peak of his powers, pushing and stretching both himself and the material into and out of shape. One CD is of piano songs, the other guitar ones, following a matrix first laid down in the Tokyo shows.

In the summer and autumn of , Hammill did a tour of solo dates in the U. He also played his only ever professional "parlour gig" at a private residence in Holland, Michigan.

In the summer of Van der Graaf Generator toured the U. Thin Air was released on 8 June Consequences , a solo studio album was released in May Again Hammill played all the instruments.

The lyrics deal with conflicted characters in various scenarios. Other World , a collaborative album with guitarist Gary Lucas , was released in February The album features Hammill's vocals, Hammill and Lucas on guitars, and Hammill's sound treatments, and is a mixture of conventional songs with extended avant-garde instrumentals. In In Amazonia was released, a collaboration album with progressive rock group Isildurs Bane. Musically, Hammill's work ranges from short simple riff -based songs to highly complex lengthy pieces.

Mainly because of the diversity of his compositions there is much debate amongst his admirers whether Hammill is to be considered a part of the progressive rock scene. In many interviews, however, Hammill has stated that he does not want to be put in the progressive rock music label, or any music label at all. Hammill's output is prolific. Many different styles of music appear in his work, among them artful complexity for instance Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night , avant garde electronic experiments Loops and Reels , Unsung , opera The Fall of the House of Usher , solo keyboard accompaniment And Close As This , solo guitar accompaniment Clutch , improvisation Spur of the Moment , film music Sonix , band recordings Enter K , and slow, melancholic balladry None of the Above.

Hammill's voice is a very distinctive element of his music. He sings in an emotional, often even dramatic way. As a former Jesuit chorister, his delivery is usually Received Pronunciation British English — notable exceptions are his Afrikaner accent on "A Motor-bike in Afrika" and his Cockney accent on "Polaroid" — and ranges in tone from peacefully celestial to screaming rants which are nevertheless highly controlled.

The concert was on an extraordinary intense level, so did the many contemporaries in the audience agree. But many people in their twenties and thirties were present as well: to my surprise, VDGG concerts certainly do not appear to be reunions of old folks.

Hammill and his colleagues really know how to tap into a new generation of audiences. I rocked so vehemently that I knock two empty beer bottles off a shelf with the back of my head. No complicated soundscapes and impenetrable layers of overdubs on A Grounding in Numbers. Simpler arrangements to suit more meaningful music. The true highlights tip the balance. Highly Strung could be taken from the 80s albums Enter K or Patience.

More than 80 songs, sometimes duplicated during different performances. A sampler from a musical career spanning more than forty years. What a sensation to experience Hammill, in between VDGG concerts with their sonic extremes, more and more in bare solo settings. Even the experienced Hammill aficionado thinks often enough: will he make it or not? In the Passionskirche Live at Rockpalast - Hamburg Categories : albums Peter Hammill albums.

This is Hammill at his best. On some Hammill albums, the arrangements are too bare but on "Singularity", the arrangements and production work are elaborated. There's a moody atmosphere throughout all of the album. Take "Famous last words" for an example. At the beginning only a harp and a keyboard can be heard. Gradually there's the addition of a piano, a background choir of dubbed vocals, bass, drums and again a soaring electric guitar that I always enjoyed on Hammill records.

This could well be my favourite track because of the great mood and the strong melody lines. The classical elements in the arrangements are awesome!

There's a soaring, psychedelic guitar and Hammill rather shouts than he sings, Hammill fans will know hat I mean.. There's a Hammond organ accompanied by a violin ensemble. Great melody line by the way. The combination of a piano solo and an ethnic percussion motive on the background has a fascinating effect. On "Friday afternoon" Hammill proofs another time what a magnificent songwriter he really is.

Even though the track exists of little more than a vocal and a piano, the melodies are compelling.

  5. Dec 04,  · Singularity ranks high in Hammill’s canon, recombining many of his familiar motifs in striking ways. The veteran prog-rocker played all of the instruments here, giving the tracks a compelling intimacy. Songs like “Famous Last Words” and “Naked to the Flame” reaffirm his disquieting lyric touch and European chanson-like melodic sense.
  6. Peter Hammill has been at it for almost 40 years now, and yet, since the early s, he has been on a new way up, creatively speaking. Clutch () and Incoherence (), his previous two studio albums, had both hit high artistic marks, but that is only one of the main reasons why Singularity was so highly anticipated by the fans. It was also the Thin Man's first studio album since.
