  3. In retrospect, Opiate seems a little haphazard, but it's possible to hear the seeds of Tool's oppressively bleak, cerebral metal in such cuts as "Sweat" and "Opiate." The two live tracks, "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off," don't sound out of place, since they share the same churning riffs, black noise, and doom that characterize Tool's sound. This is not as developed as either Undertow or Ænima 6/
  4. It's almost like I'm swimming. The sun is burning hot again on the hunter and the fisherman, and he's trying to remember when, but it makes him dizzy. Seems like I've been here before. Seems so familiar. Seems like I'm slipping into a dream within a dream. Must be the way you whisper. The sun is setting cool .

  6. Opiate is Tool's debut EP that combines a few short studio and live songs exclusive to this mini album. Here, the band are just starting to develop their noise. The album contains some bone crunching songs such as "Part of Me" and "Hush". These two being the highlights of the record/5(34).
  7. Found it at Barnes in Nobles for $ Great sound quality. Seems distinguished from other releases of this album under Volcano for the two reasons listed in summary: Parental Warning is printed on the cover, not a sticker; No double groove, The Gaping Lotus Experience plays after a period of silence post Opiate, mirroring how the 'secret track' was distributed on CDs.
  8. Opiate is a collection of heavy, aggressive, cynical music (though the tail end of the title track sounds more like acid rock), packaged in songs noticeably shorter than on their later efforts (Undertow, , and Aenima, ). While not as impressive as Undertow, arguably their finest effort, Opiate has a definite appeal. If ear-crunching riffs and enraged lyrics are what you go for, check this one out/5(1).
  9. Background and recording. Opiate features seven songs spanning six tracks, two of which are live recordings. Most versions of the EP (all except the cassette) feature the hidden seventh song titled "The Gaping Lotus Experience". On CD versions, the song is hidden at the end of the last track of the album, "Opiate", and begins approximately 6 minutes and 10 seconds into the track after "Opiate" .
