But with Lee Michaels, a long held dream of mine has finally been fulfilled. The sound is cleaner and more immediate and has the feeling of being more open overall, and without the dreaded compression that bunches everything into a tight mess of sound. A slight quibble--I wish there were extra tracks appended to these albums--demos, alternates, live stuff--but I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth I suppose.

These albums fall somewhere between three and four "stars" depending on the song and how deep your love for late '60s rock is. Michaels released seven albums in the years But except for a couple of singles he never really became well known. And that's too bad. He had a soulful voice that he could unleash to good effect, his Hammond organ playing along with his good guitar chops was pretty awesome sounding, and his cover song choices were always pretty good.

In this day and age, when seemingly every album, by every artist has been reissued, Michaels' albums have been somehow overlooked. This set puts things right as far as the original albums. Each album comes with the original album graphics the first album screams late '60s in gate-fold style packaging, and a 40 page booklet with an essay by Brett Milano on each album in chronological order and period photos and other ephemera, with everything fitting inside a fairly flimsy outer box.

If this box is too much for you, there's a single disc compilation just released from this same label. The album rocked along on the strength of Michaels' voice and Hammond playing. In truth perhaps this album hasn't aged as well as others, but for fans like me who were there at the time it's a nice signpost of the late '60s. It's a wonderful evocation of that time--but to be honest--I can't imagine what the album sounds like to more "modern" ears from later generations.
