Einar A. Ella Fitzgerald. Don't Be That Way. Love Me or Leave Me. I Hear Music. What Am I Here For? I'm Gonna Go Fishin'. I Won't Dance. I Only Have Eyes for You. How lucky we are that Norman Granz had her make so many records. And at her peak of vocal powers. This is a real gem and an absolute must for Ella fans. Great arrangements by Marty Paitch and the cream of West Coast jazzmen. Just buy it. Cd and packing were very good. Arrived within quoted timescale. CD case not brilliant condition but CD perfect.
Plays great. Excellent bargain. Marty Paich's Dek-tette is a magnificent and brilliantly arranged band I've heard it work brilliantly with Mel Torme , quite compatible with the Ella's deliverance: at first glance light and relaxed, but often showing her virtuoso abilities - not only in faster or scatting on Roy Eldridge's and Buster Harding's "Little Jazz" numbers. The subtle feel for rhythm and gentle emotions on some tracks might remind you of Johnny Hartman-John Coltrane collaboration, other tracks are reminiscent of Ella-Basie collaborations It's recorded in , originally issued on LP in And the CD has some very welcome extra tracks.
GET IT! One person found this helpful. This CD re-issue is great value, with extra tracks compared with the original vinyl LP, but more importantly it has detailed information about the recording and the musicians; something totally missing from the original version.
This album is not without its' critics because it is a departure from the Ella songbook albums of the late 50's, all of which were outstanding productions.
However, I loved this album from the moment I bought it as a 16 year-old in and it still gives me great pleasure to hear Ella's efortless singing backed by the smooth west coast sound of the Marty Paich dek-tette without the scratches! It still amazes me that albums like this with impeccable sound quality were recorded within two or three days compared with the two or three years it takes in this modern era! Personally I could have lived without the additional tracks, some of which were recorded some yearts later, as the original album was so well-balanced in the selection of material.
